Grahamstown’s Oldenburgia Hiking Club has established a new one day hiking trail – the Oldenburgia Day Trail – on the southern commonage.

The 17km circular, clockwise route begins and ends at the “Mayor’s Seat” at the top of Mountain Drive, follows it past the toposcope and then drops down into Featherstone Kloof – through lovely indigenous forest – and up the other side of the kloof on to the commonage opposite Mountain Drive.

It returns to Mountain Drive via the saddle at the head of Featherstone Kloof and Dassies Krantz. The trail could be classified as moderately difficult and is approximately 5-6 hours' walking time.

It is possible to cut out the 5km length of Mountain Drive to shorten it to 12km, but the shorter version still includes the steeper and more difficult terrain.

Several other shorter variations of the trail are possible, many of which are familiar to walkers.

The Oldenburgia Hiking Club does day trails and weekend hikes, mostly around Grahamstown but also further afield.

Day hikes are open to the public and shared transport means it's not essential to have your own vehicle.

Weekend hikes are for club members only.
