A number of Grahamstown karateka took part in the SASKA Dan and Kyu Grading in Port Elizabeth.

Passing their 1st Kyu Brown Belt were Lutho Singata (Makana Karate Club), Linolonwabo Makana (Joza Karate Club) and Thaduxolo Royi (Joza Karate Club). Passing their 1st Dan Black Belt were Bonani Kutsi (Joza Karate Club) and Mel Ackerman (ECSR).

The grading was conducted by Shihan Koos Burger with a panel of senior instructors.

In Japanese karate “kyu” refers to belts awarded to students who have not yet reached black belt level (9th kyu to 1st kyu) while “dan” is associated with black belt rankings (1st to 10th dan black belt).

For example, 1st kyu brown belt is the final student grade prior to 1st dan black belt.
