Makana is on the map of municipalities that will host activities to celebrate National Science Week from 1-8 August. This year’s programme of activities to be hosted for the general public in Makana Municipality will include the Rhodes University/Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, a community science awareness day, science pub quiz, science promotion, Sci-fi in the City film screening, mall promotions, and the Scifest Africa 2016 Poster Competition.
The programme, which celebrates the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, has been carefully crafted by implementing partners that include the Creative City Project, National English Literary Museum (NELM), Scifest Africa and the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB).
One of the highlights on the programme is the community science awareness day that will use educational theatre, exhibitions, a science show and workshops to demonstrate that science plays an integral role in our daily lives, and will give the people of Grahamstown an opportunity to meet the scientists living within their community.
The awareness day will be held at Tantyi Hall, Z Street from midday to 5pm on Sunday, 2 August and entry is free.
The programme also introduces the use of the arts to encourage the general public to engage with science.
Exhibitions, various art and craft workshops, a poster competition, and the Sci-fi in the City film screening are some of the ways in which the implementing partners would like to convince the general public that science can be accessible and fun.
The Sci-fi in the City film screening invites audiences to bring a duvet, blanket and popcorn and settle down for screenings of Interstellar and 2001:
A Space Odyssey to be introduced by NASA’s Chief Technologist. Sci-fi in the City will be held in the City Hall on Friday 7 August with screenings scheduled at 6pm (Interstellar) and 9pm (2001: A Space Odyssey).
The entrance fee is R10 per person for one or both movies and a tuckshop will be available.
