Jene Banfield and Terri-Lynn Penney of Grahamstown-based Run/Walk For Life Athletics Club represented Eastern Province at the South African Half Marathon Championships last Saturday.
The Jumbo Nelson Mandela Bay City Half Marathon incorporating ASA Championships hosted the top athletes from around the country and, with prize money of R35 000 each for the male and female winner, has the highest purse for a half marathon in the country.
It was also used to select a half marathon team for the World Championships.
Lucky Mohale raced to victory in a great time of 1 hour 2 minutes and 6 seconds, while the women’s winner was Lebo Phalula who finished in 1:11:54.
Penney was the sixth woman in the 35 to 39 age category, while Banfield was seventh in the 40 to 49 age category.
While the event was a provincial race, it was also an open event attracting many athletes from around the province and had a total of 473 finishers.
