Three Kingswood College pupils were injured in a bus accident near Cookhouse on Thursday 1 July.

Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the accident happened on the N10.

The pupils were in the bus returning to Port Elizabeth from a squash tournament in Gauteng.

"There were 14 pupils in the bus and the driver alleged that a truck left its lane and came to his side of the road. When he tried to avoid it, he lost control of the bus, swerved off the left of the road and went about 20 meters down the bank," said Govender.

The children were taken to various hospitals in Port Elizabeth.

Govender said according to information they had received, only two were in a serious condition.

She said a case of reckless and negligent driving had been opened by the police.

An official statement on the Kingswood College website confirmed the accident.

The injured pupils were named as Veer Bills, Zinathi Mbenyana and Kuhle Gontshi.

Bills and Mbenyana were reported to have been slightly injured and sustained severe bruising.

"The third pupil, Kuhle Gontshi, sustained more severe injuries and underwent surgery in Port Elizabeth on Thursday morning.

"The College awaits further information on her condition," the website post said.

"Her mother described her injuries as serious but said that she is in a stable condition.

The College will update the information as it becomes available," read the statement.
