This weekend will mark the annual KDay fixtures in hockey, rugby and netball between St Andrew’s College/Diocesan School for Girls and Kingswood College.

Both schools have been preparing for the day – practising their war cries, marking fields and staying for training sessions long into the afternoon.

The town is also gearing up for the extra visitors who flock here for the weekend’s activities.

The various first team captains met on St Andrew’s St Aidan’s sports field for a group photo this week.

The excitement – among some – could be felt, as they greeted their opposite numbers.

The two rugby 1st XV captains shared some thoughts with Grocott’s Mail.

St Andrew’s captain, Tom Lane, said what made the weekend extra special for him was seeing old boys returning to the school and supporting the various teams.

He remembered the year before he began playing for the first team, when he saw a number of old boys standing along the touchline.

Kingswood captain, Josh Shelley, recalls looking up to the 1st XV as a youngster and dreaming about the day when he might run out on the field on KDay.

Now that moment is nearly here.

The next generation of players will also be in action earlier in the day and, while the day culminates with the 1st XV clash, there is still great exciement in the U9s.

Rugby coach at St Andrew’s Prep, Richard Jackson, said this would be a good match to watch out for “as it’s their first KDay”.
