Makana Boxing Organisation (Makabo) hasn't allowed lack of administrative support to hamper their intention to promote the sport of boxing in Grahamstown.

Makana Boxing Organisation (Makabo) hasn't allowed lack of administrative support to hamper their intention to promote the sport of boxing in Grahamstown.

The organisation has frequently held amateur boxing tournaments, to help up-and-coming boxers hone their skills.

Saturday 25 April was the third boxing tournament in 2015.

The spectacle was hosted at a new venue, the new Indoor Sports Centre.

Amateur boxers from the cadets (12-17) to the elite division didn’t disappoint the small crowd that gathered to cheer, as their favourite boxers took to the ring to exchange blows.

The tournament, hosted solely by Makabo featured boxers from various clubs, including Nkuthazo, Mayfield, Mfuzo and Middledrift Rehabilitation Centre.

In the past the organisation has expressed concerns for not receiving support.

Before the bouts commenced in Saturday, the organisers took time to acknowledge IBO All Africa Games champion Sithembiso Faye, who was there to show support for the amateurs in the tournament.

The junior bantamweight boxer from Mdantsane is currently based in Grahamstown.

He attends school in this town and organisers said it was the first time a boxing belt was seen inside a ring in Grahamstown.

Three female boxers from Mfuzo boxing camp who returned from a recent South African Amateur Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) event with medals were given a standing ovation.
