Three Grahamstown amateur boxers returned from the recent South African National Boxing Organisation (Sanabo) junior and youth championships with medals.
The three – Ntombikayise Cunge (Nombulelo Secondary School), Siyaxolisa Mapapu (Nombulelo) and Nomathamsanqa Litye – are all members of Grahamstown-based Mfuzo Boxing Camp.
Ntombikayise took part in the junior 52kg (15 to 16 year olds) category, winning bronze. Siyaxolisa (69kg) and Nomathamsanqa (75kg) both won silver in the youth (17- to 18-year-olds) category.
“We are all proud in our gym,” said Mfuzo Boxing Camp manager Mfuzo Dyira, adding that the club had battled for a long time to get female boxers to join the club.
“We were happy that they were included in the Eastern Cape team, and bringing medals was a plus,” said Dyira.
The three local boxers, together with Thandiswa Kwanini and Noxolo Bill from Sundays River, were part of the Cacadu Amateur Boxing Organisation (Cabo), which represent Eastern Cape at the nationals.
These took place in the Thabong Community Hall in Welkom.
The Eastern Cape claimed second place in the overall standings.
Mfuzo Boxing Camp coach, Luyanda Dibela, who travelled with the Cabo team as coach, believes the boxers have the potential to go to the SA games – "although the girls have a lot of work before then".
