In a press statement released on Thursday 18 December, Eskom said the power system is expected to remain” constrained but stable” during this period.
However, is said any extra load or faults in the system “may necessitate the need to implement load shedding.”
It said Eskom is “cautiously confident” load shedding will not take place during the festive season, due to many industries winding down their business, coupled with “return to service of some of our power generating units and building up of emergency reserves.”
Eskom said it will use this period to intensify its plant maintenance programme.
Eskom has urged South Africans to use electricity sparingly by “Living Lightly” over the next few months.
Eskom’s tips to saving electricity include: switching off geysers and pool pumps; switching off non-essential lights; efficient use of air conditioners by keeping the room temperature at 23°C; and responding to alerts on TV each evening.
Eskom customers are asked to reduce electricity usage especially between 5.30pm to 6.30pm to help ease pressure on the system.
“We urge all South Africans to partner with us to save 10% of their electricity usage throughout the day”, Eskom said.
