The writing and editing students at Rhodes University's School of Journalism have developed blogs around different themes in a move to take their educational experience to the next level.
These blogs are collectively known as the “beat” blogs and are produced by a team of writers and editors that contribute to the production of content each week. In terms of skills, the writing and editing students are not limited.
They are encouraged to take photographs and use social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Storify to add depth and variety to the content that they have written. Four blogs were birthed by the writing and editing students, each focussing on a different topic of interest.
These blogs include Embizweni, The Healthy Bugs, Artbeat and Ukufunda. Embizweni invites the community to have a conversation about public life and service delivery in Grahamstown.
The Embizweni team reports stories and encourages their readers to share their views and experiences of public life in the comments section. Embizweni has developed close relationships with the Public Service Accountability Monitor (PSAM) and the citizen Facebook group, Grahamstown Municipal Services Outage Reporting.
The Healthy Bugs is not merely a blog for those who have jumped on the health wagon. It is a blog that is concerned with health information in Makana and includes posts on health reports, policies and reviews.
The Healthy Bugs reporters collaborate with NGOs, health institutions and organisations as a way of providing useful information to the public. You can also enjoy a healthy tip or two when you peruse this blog.
What would Grahamstown be without a blog that centres on education? Ukufunda which means “to read/learn” in isiXhosa is a blog that is devoted to building a community of interest around education. The blog is focused on building networks with all of the involvedparties such as schools, education activists and interested citizens.
