19-year-old Zikhona Skeyi from Masibambane boxing club will be exchanging blows with international athletes from the amateur ranks in the upcoming Lower Saxony Open Boxing federation visit.
Skeyi is the only boxer from Makana chosen to compete during the visit.
The tournament, hosted by the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, the Eastern Cape Armature Boxing (Ecabo) and the Eastern Cape Sports Council (ECSC) will feature amateur boxers from Lower Saxony, a German state.
Skeyi – who has had a string of impressive performances at amateur level so far – was selected by Ecabo from a host of other potential female boxers in the province.
She will be joined by Monalisa Takane from the Sundays River municipality as the only two boxers from the Cacadu region.
Ecabo selects boxers to take part in the tournament according to the number of boxers sent by the visiting organisation.
Age and weight division are what determines which boxers get the nod to form part of the Ecabo team.
The tournament also forms part of an effort to nurture and cement working relations between the Eastern Cape provincial government and the State of Lower Saxony.
The visit by the State of Lower Saxony begins today (24 October 2014) with their arrival at East London airport.
The visit will be 12 days long with the first leg of the tournament held in Mdantsane, second leg in Mthatha and the final leg in KwaZakhele with the boxers departuring on 3 November.
