The Rhodes University Sports Council’s Sports Awards dinner takes place at the Monument this evening, 17 October.

Invited guests include students, staff and coaching staff.

Nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year is two-time winner of the award Natalie Ross of the Athletics Club. Ross won a bronze medal at the World Duathlon championships in August this year.

Also nominated are Nicola Wilmot (Rowing club) who won a gold medal for the coxed 4 at the South African Championships; Nomsa Chemuru (Volleyball) who represented the Eastern Province women’s A team that participated at the National tournament in 2014; Nolwazi Khuluse (Basketball) who was selected for the Eastern Cape woman’s A team that participated at the National championships in September 2014 and Mart Mari De Bruin (Rifle) for making the Randal team (top 10 women in South Africa).

Nominated for Sportsman of the Year are: Jedrick Theron, Robert Stuart-Thompson, Nicolas Greeff and Tristan Wentworth (Rowing Club) for winning gold for the coxed 4 at the South African Championships; Lance Ho (Archery) who made the South African side for 2014; Nyasha Chinoyuwadza (Rugby) who made the Zimbabwean U20 rugby team; Cody Van Wyk (Hockey Club) who represented South Africa U18 A hockey team that participated at the youth Olympics and Brendon Smith (Hockey) for making the EP Men’s A team that participated at the National IPT.

Siyabulela Magopeni, assistant manager at Rhodes Sports Administration said there is a close contest for the Club and Committee of the Year awards.
