A random selection system deprived Grahamstown schools of the opportunity to participate in this year’s Copa Coca-Cola under-15 tournament.

The sponsoring company used the South African Schools Administration and Management System (SASAMS) to select this year’s participants as the majority of schools failed to submit their registration form by the dealine.

The random selection used meant that no schools from Grahamstown were lucky enough to take part in the annual soccer event. It was not all doom and gloom though, as the town successfully hosted the tournament’s district championships.

The provincial champions were crowned at SANDF Fields. Sikhulile Senior Secondary School from Amathole Municipality was crowned the provincial champions and will go on to represent the province at the national championships in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Cacadu district’s representative in the provincial championships, Ikamva Lesizwe Combined School had a disappointing outing, finishing last in their group after losing both their matches.

A startling 33 goals were scored in just 10 matches during the tournament with only two games producing less than three goals.
