Grahamstown's Standard Bank Jazz Festival and Port Elizabeth's Dorothea Moors were among 12 business and arts partnerships honoured at the 17th Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) Awards last week.
Moors, director of Coca-Cola Sabco in PE, was named Art Champion and the Standard Bank Jazz Festival took the Long Term Partnership Award at the 17th Business Day BASA awards at Johannesburg’s Market Theatre.
Moors, who chairs the board of the GFI Gallery, is well-known for her support of the visual arts in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.
Standard Bank of South Africa was honoured for its involvement in jazz, which started in 1997 with the Jazz Festival at the National Arts Festival.
“Our annual awards are always a great opportunity to get a snapshot of how the arts and business are interfacing,” said BASA CEO Michelle Constant.
“This year it’s been gratifying to see many first time winners, a widespread footprint across the country and also businesses of different sizes and types being nominated and honoured as winners.”
Among those recognised were:
Auto & General Insurance Company, First Time Sponsor Award for supporting the Theatre on the Square Redefine Properties, the Development Award, for support of the Buskaid Music Academy.
Siemens, the Arts & the Environment Award, for Tree of Wisdom–a four-story sculpture at the Mandela School of Science & Technology .
The Witness Newspaper, the Media Sponsorship Award, for The Hilton Arts Festival Buz Publicity, the Small Business Award, for work with ASSITEJ SA, a group that believes in the power of theatre to transform youths' lives.
Radio Sonder Grense RSG, the Innovation Award, for its RSG Kunstefees 2013–a four-day arts festival presented on air.
Rand Merchant Bank, the Increasing Access to the Arts Award, for the National School of the Arts Festival of Fame, a five-day celebration of all the arts.
The Embassy of the Netherlands, the Diplomacy in the Arts Spier, the Chairman’s Premier Award
Bank of America, the International Sponsorship Award, for Gerard Sekoto: Song for Sekoto Exhibition at the Wits Art Museum.
KPMG Services, the Strategic Project Award, for the multifaceted “We are KPMG” project Adams & Adams, Sponsorship in Kind Award for its work with Design Indaba.
Dale Smith, Mentor of the Year accolade, for work with the Johannesburg Youth Orchestra Company.
