Owner of Makana BP, Denis Pagel, unexpectedly died early on Wednesday 7 May at the UCT Academic Hospital in Cape Town.

Previously a manager at Standard Bank, Denis was well known, respected and much loved by people of Grahamstown. He was a keen runner and cyclist and competed regularly, in among others, the Two Oceans, the Cape Argus and Knysna Marathon. He previously served as treasurer for Brookshaw Home, was involved in the Swaeltjienes community project, and was a faithful member of the local Nederduitse Gereformeeerde Kerk, said Dominee Strauss de Jager.

Denis spent the last 64 days undergoing bone marrow stem cell treatment as a possible cancer cure in Cape Town with his wife, Marieta, at his side, when complications developed.

His wife Marieta, sons Corné, Gavin and Ruan and many good friends and colleagues are tremendously saddened by his loss, said de Jager.
