Armed robbers who hit a local supermarket on Saturday 29 March injured a staff member and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Shoprite Checkers communications manager Sarita Van Wyk confirmed that an armed robbery took place at its Grahamstown branch approximately one hour after the store closed for trading on Saturday.

"Eight armed men launched the attack on the store during which one staff member sustained injuries," she said.

A sum of money, as well as some produce was taken before the criminals fled the scene, Van Wyk said.

She referred further questions to the local police.

Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender was not available to comment. Govender said she was still gathering information about the incident.
