Grahamstown’s one and only women’s football club, African Connection, began the season last Sunday 23 February with a 'walkover' when their opponents, Young Chiefs from Marselle near Kenton-on-Sea, did not pitch up.
African Connection are the defending champions of the SAFA Cacadu Regional Women’s Soccer League.
Coach Chris Totobela said he was unhappy about the walkover as he wanted to test his combinations in the game.
He has made two new signings this season, one of which is young defender, Wandipha Antoni, from African Connection’s rival club AC Milan, Cacadu. The other is Khanyisa Gwata, a striker who has not played in the league before and is currently studying at Victoria Girls High School in Grahamstown. Totobela had only praise for the new forward: “I expect Khanyisa to learn from the other players this season, but next season I expect her to excel.”
When asked about his club’s chances this season he said: “It is far too early to tell.”
