Two Grahamstown policemen are currently in Johannesburg showing off their guns at Gold Reef City. And when I say "guns" I mean biceps.
After placing second and third in their divisions at last Saturday's World Physique Federation (WPF) SA champs for police in East London, they're now mingling with international bodybuilders at the WPF show in Gauteng.
Lieutenant-colonel Johan Botha came third in the senior men's under-90 kilogram category. Constable Lesley Sauls placed second among the novices.
The competition was held at Hudson Park High School on Saturday 21 September.
"It was obviously wonderful to represent our side in the police forum, all the provinces competed," said Botha. Sauls said it was a great challenge but also a big achievement to compete and do well against police officers from around the country.
"It is about working hard in the gym and a proper diet," Sauls said.
Grahamstown station commander Morgan Govender commended his officers on their hard work and success.
"I went to one of their exhibitions and I thought that they were doing very well. I am obviously proud of their achievements," Govender said.
"What they do takes a lot of discipline, which they have. Even now that they are going to the competition in Johannesburg, I wish them well."
Sauls and Botha say their commander has been there for much of their journey.
"We would like to give a special thanks to our commander for the special support that he has given to us so far in our careers," Botha said, "as he is also a supportive and keen gym trainer."
Both men in blue are also key members of the Makana Natural Bodybuilding Club that opened earlier this year.
Botha is head-charge and Sauls is vice-chairman of the local gym that promotes steroid-free bodybuilding and fitness.
The WPF show in Johannesburg started on Thursday 26 September and ends on Monday.
