Two local soccer players scored a dream opportunity over the weekend when they were invited to play for Alexandria soccer club, Cacadu United.

Formerly known as Manchester, Cacadu United are part of the South African Football Association (Safa) Vodacom League. The team were in Grahamstown on Saturday as part of their pre-season preparations.

Former Makana Rhini United (Maru) players Simphiwe Twani and Luvuyo Mantashe, both 21, were hand-picked by the Cacadu United coaching staff after Maru beat Cacadu United 1-0 in their friendly match on Saturday 14 September.

Maru currently play in the Safa Cacadu league (one league below the Vodacom league). In the morning, Cacadu United faced City Pirates, also in the Cacadu league.

Cacadu United head coach Chancey January said he had played his U23 squad against City Pirates. The Grahamstown side won 2-1. January said he wasn't concerned about the score in either game, but said it was rather a chance for him to pick his starting squad for the upcoming season. He said the friendly games had also given him a chance to see his new players perform.

January said his squad had comprised 30 members before the weekend. The team will be trimmed to the 25 who will play in the 2013-2014 season. January said both Twani and Mantashe were among the 25 man team selected to play in the Vodacom league.
The Vodacom league is scheduled to start on 29 September.
