Grahamstown's First City Battalion will stage a farewell parade on Saturday 14 September, through the city's streets before it sets off on a border-safeguarding mission.

In a first, Lieutenant-Colonel Roger Keeton will lead his First City Battalion, a Reserve Force unit, independently of any Regular Force unit on OPs CORONA (border safeguarding) later this year.

Up to this time Reserve Force units have deployed at only Company strength under command of Regular Force units. First City has deployed at platoon and company strength in Burundi, Sudan and the DRC. The unit also deployed a company last year on OPs CORONA.

Grahamstown is home to a number of members and their families.

First City will return in April 2014.
