World Peace Day is on its way and to celebrate, more than 100 school children who participate in Grahamstown’s awareNet programmes will compete to perform the best Peace Day song.
Groups from Nathaniel Nyaluza Secondary, CM Vellem Higher Primary, Mary Waters High, Good Shepherd Primary and Ntaba Maria Secondary schools have written their own lyrics.
They’ll perform them on Wednesday 18 September to a backing track composed by Sound Technology lecturer at the Rhodes Department of Music and Musicology, Corinne Cooper, along with students Sean Devonport and Tsukudu Moroeng.
Hip hop artist and composer Moroeng is also one of the judges.
Lunga Heleni and Zukani Budaza, of Sonic Art Studio, helped the children compose their lyrics.
A highlight of Wednesday’s event will be a performance by kwaito artist Siyanda, a past best music artist award-winner for the Cacadu district.
Following the competition, Cooper will record and produce a CD at the department's recording studio. A music video, through the Rhodes journalism school, is also in the offing.
“This year the talent is the best I’ve ever seen,” said awareNet programme co-ordinator Terri-Lynn Penney this week.
The showdown on Wednesday will be in Joza’s Extension 9 hall at 2pm. Entry is free.
The United Nations annual International Day of Peace is on Saturday 21 September.
