Last week Grocott’s Mail issued a photo and eyewitness accounts of an incident involving a Mercedes Benz that flipped in Somerset Street on Thursday 29 August.

This week the driver, first-year Rhodes student Fletcher Grafton, told Grocott's Mail, “The road was wet and I turned the corner going to fast at Debonairs."

He said neither he nor passenger, Ben Jones, was injured.

Grafton said the police had administered a breathalyser test which had indicated he was under the alcohol limit. Captain Mali Govender of the Grahamstown Police said, “There are no reports of drunk driving recorded that night. Usually if an accident happens, it is up to the passenger to report the accident. Therefore, the accident has been documented as any accident has to be, but nothing else was found.”

Grafton said once they had been cleared to leave by the police and paramedics, he had proceeded to the Rat and Parrot pub to pay a bar tab. His friend had left the tab open after rushing out on hearing Grafton had been in an accident.

“From then on I returned back to my residence,” Grafton said.
