Speaking to Grocott's Mail on Thursday 5 September, ANC regional secretary Scara Njadayi said the party had established a political committee to look into these and other issues pertaining to Makana Municipality that have been in the media.
Njadayi said the committee would also focus on other reports, such as alleged links by a councillor to a property company that built a mall without submitting plans. Njadayi said political processes were in place to deal with these issues. "When these processes are concluded, we will let the Makana community know."
The comments come as a 46-year-old local councillor together with her co-accused are scheduled to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 10 September to face charges of assault following an incident on 8 June. Police said a resident opened a criminal case against the councillor after he was allegedly beaten up by about 15 people, including the councillor.
Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said the man alleges that around 04.2am that day he was awoken by a knock on the door. A mob kicked down his door, dragged him outside and assaulted him, Govender said. A 35-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman were arrested.
Further assault charges involving the 46-year-old councillor, in connection with a fight over meat at the Makana Resort, were thrown out of court. Meanwhile ward 11 councillor Mncedisi Gojela was found not guilty of charges of assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm last monthdue to lack of evidence.
Njadayi said they would deal with all the cases. "We will call a press briefing when all these processes have been finalised," he said. The councillor is due to appear in court on Tuesday, 9 September.
