I’ve read about various technological advances and gadgets and I have my favourites. However, I never imagined socks that could think on your feet, and then tell you what they’re thinking.

I’ve read about various technological advances and gadgets and I have my favourites. However, I never imagined socks that could think on your feet, and then tell you what they’re thinking.

Wearable technology is the latest craze and wearable tech enterprise, Heapsylon, has developed Sensoria Fitness Socks, which are packed with a variety of smart capabilities.

This latest innovation dubbed “the smart sock” has leapt into first place on my rating of techno coolness and is a delight for any runner. The socks use a special textile feeler to allow them to communicate to a Bluetooth-powered ankle sensor.

The sensor can measure how a runner lands on the ground and then sends data to the user’s smartphone. From there the data can be captured, stored and compared.

Technology that’ll knock your socks off, right?

The Sensoria app can act as a virtual coach as it detects when you land on our feet and how you stride, giving you feedback on how to best position your feet. This in turn could prevent injuries. That’s right, smart socks that act as your running coach. It’ll tell you how many steps you’ve taken, the distance you’ve travelled, your speed and calories burned.

In case you needed a reminder that you’ve been sitting for too long and need to move around, you’ll be sent a message about that too.

Sensoria Fitness Socks will give you all this data, which is yours to share as you please in case your Facebook friends and Twitter followers want to know exactly what you’ve been up to and want to track your every step. The Sensoria smart socks come with a magnetic anklet and companion iPhone and Android apps.

You can even wash these smart socks.

For those fashion-conscious folk, the Sensoria anklet will also be available in colours ranging from light blue, black and pink so that you can match your outfit to your shoes.

At first I thought this was another ridiculous concept, but I’ve spoken to some runners and it appears as though this is actually a useful device. The socks will go on sale in America in March 2014 so get your online order in. Who knows, maybe I’ll buy a pair in the long run.
