Spring has sprung and what better way to greet the new season than with a colour festival that promotes healthy living, individuality, happiness and giving back to the community.

Spring has sprung and what better way to greet the new season than with a colour festival that promotes healthy living, individuality, happiness and giving back to the community.

The Colour Run started by Travis Snyder a year ago, was hosted at the Nelson Mandela Municipal University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth on Sunday 1 September.

organisers say it is the first event of its kind in Africa. Similar events have been hosted in other parts of the world such as the US, Brazil and Italy.

Participants lined up at the start in white T-shirts, ready to walk or run to the finish.

It's a 5km untimed run with a point at each kilometre where participants are doused in a specific vibrant colour.

"Everybody was happy to be there. It was an event for all ages, young and old," said Chantel Brock, a teacher at Victoria Primary School who took part.

The event seeks to promote health and well-being, as well as a happy attitude towards life. Another aim is to give back to the community, in the form of the proceeds.

"I would definitely encourage people to take part! I'm not a sporty person at all, but the Colour Run is so much fun that it hardly seems to count as exercise," said Kate Jennings, a student from Rhodes University.

The Colour Run is scheduled to take place in Cape Town on 19 October and on 8 December in Durban. Dates have not yet been posted on The Colour Run website for Johannesburg and Pretoria.
