Grahamstown runners and cyclists put on their running shoes and readied their bikes for Tuesday 27 August's challenge: the 3.4km ascent up Woest Hill, just outside Grahamstown.

Competitors pushed themselves to the limit, straining up the long and winding road as the sun set in the distance. Peter Britz won the cyclists' category.

The first woman home was cyclist Catherine Deiner. Duathlon world championship gold medallist Natalie Ross took first place in the women runners' category and Sean Swanepoel was the fastest male runner.

“My lungs are burning, but I’m glad to have finished,” said Britz, who celebrated his first victory in the race he's done many times previously. Ross, said, “It was really tiring. I’ve done it before, but I haven’t run in almost a month.” Prizes were handed out after the event to winners of each category.

There were also several spot prizes chosen at random.

Competitor Laura De Lange laughed as she told Grocott’s Mail about her experience. “It’s tough. Why do I do this to myself? But I guess it’s also a lot of fun.”

The event was organised by the Saints & Sinners cycling club and sponsored by local businesses Albany Sports, The Motion Shop, The Red Café, Redwood Spur and Wallace's Pharmacy.
