Team Mothlabane Stars from Archie Mbolekwa Primary School won this year’s Amazing Chase challenge hosted by Makana Tourism.
Grahamstonians scurried through town solving clues and trying to beat the clock in the action-packed event on Sunday 25 August. Around 110 people in 35 teams took part, moving from one check point to the next, competing for cash prizes and gift vouchers.
The Amazing Chase is an annual event that raises funds for charity in celebration of National Tourism Month.
The race layout ensured that everyone participating did so at their own pace, with an easy trail through the Makana Botanical Gardens and a tougher route through town. Students from East Cape Midlands College acted as marshals and time keepers.
After finishing the river traverse and waiting for her team mates, Thandaza Stout, 14, of the Mothlabane Stars said, “We're having fun, the river pull was hard, but I made it.” Others on the winning team were Sindile Dyubuti, Masixole Xayiya and Unanthi Sonanzi.
They were followed by the Rotaract Club of Grahamstown Sunset team (Rose-Marie Hurford and Chade Bowles) who joined the race at the last minute. Hurford said it was a great opportunity to meet people from all walks of life. “We weren’t prepared, we arrived on the day to help out with the [Rotaract] stall. But when we got there we were asked to join the race, so Chade and I competed."
“It was a lot of fun. We really enjoyed it, even though we weren’t mentally prepared. It was awesome to see everyone in the community participating, from children to older people.”
The Moms (Jackie de Klerk and Tanya van Onselen) came in third place, and Makana Tourism Director Susan Waugh was delighted with the day’s outcome. “We didn’t expect to raise so much money. There were a few glitches, as is always the case, but everyone had a happy time and I think my team did a great job,” Waugh said.
Makana Tourism raised R2 650 that will be donated to four charities: Society for the Physically Disabled, Sinakho Aftercare Facility for disabled children, Kuyasa Special School and McKaiser Old Age Home.
