The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have announced their presence in Grahamstown.

Members of Julius Malema's newly founded party visited the Grocott's Mail offices on Thursday.

Sithembele Sthunda, a member of the party's provincial command team, said they are not "comrades" but "fighters". He said the ANC had failed to address the issues troubling the country's citizens. "We are fighting for land, health, education and economic freedom at large," he said.

Sthunda said there was no freedom without land, water and electricity.

"Our aim is to make Grahamstown, Cacadu district, Eastern Cape provinces and South Africa as a country an equal, educated and balanced society," he said.

Talking at local level, Sthunda said they would mobilise and conduct popular education for the party. Cacadu District convenor for EFF Puleng Leeu said there are already party members in Grahamstown and that they plan to open an office here.

She said housing was still a problem for many people in the city. "We will challenge the housing issue and make sure that people are getting houses," she said.
