Police have issued a stern warning after a man in his 50s was mauled to death by dogs in Tantyi location.

According to police reports, it is believed that the incident happened when the man was on his way back from work. Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said they were called to Z Street in the early hours of 3 August after a man was reportedly left lying in the street after a dog attack.

The scene that met officers was tragic, she said.

"A post mortem was conducted and the victim died as a result of loss of blood due to his injuries suffered by the bites of the dogs," Govender said.

Police have opened an inquest docket for investigation, she said, and are in the process of planning a joint operation with relevant community stakeholders to rid the town of stray dogs. Tantyi residents have been concerned about packs of dogs roaming the area, and it's not the first time people have been attacked.

Govender issued a warning to all dog owners to ensure that they comply with municipal by-laws.
