On the contrary, the local branch continues to grow and it expands its staff on an annual basis.
“Being a franchise store, we only react to our local economy and are largely unaffected by what happens nationally as far as labour is concerned,” said owner Jon Campbell, who employs almost 250 people in Grahamstown, excluding security company personnel.
“Annually there is an increase of staff for new positions,” he added.
Last week news site Fin24 reported hat Pick n Pay will offer voluntary retrenchments to staff in its head and regional head offices.
Staff members who opt for retrenchment will receive a standard severance package of one week’s pay for every year of service, according to Fin24.
The retrenchments are part of initiatives to cut down on costs for the grocer. Pick n Pay, the second largest grocer in the country, reported a 31% year-on-year decline in profits in April.
