Makana Natural Body Building Club members won four golds at its Grahamstown Body Building Championships at the Recreation Hall on Sunday 28 July.
Lee Mapalang won the U21 division and was also the overall junior winner.
Luke Hall (U15) and Melo Johannes (heavyweight) also won gold in their division.
The Makana Natural Body Building Club was formed in Grahamstown at the end of April and members have been taking part in various Eastern Province body building competitions since then.
This is the first competition the club has organised and was a first for some of the members.
President of the Makana Natural Body Building Club, Weston du Plessis, said some of the members who took part in Saturday's competition had been training with the club for only two weeks.
Among the club's training staff are Du Plessis, Johan Botha, Rudolph Williams and Lesley Sauls.
President of the South African National Body Building Association, Godfrey Simmons, was one of the judges at Sunday's event and said the competition was beyond his expectations.
“Some of the guys are fresh in the system (new to body building) so well done to them,” said Simmons.
Du Plessis said as it was their first competition they decided to open it to all body builders in order to get more competition in each age group.
“It was awesome. I don't have words to describe how I feel,” said du Plessis about the response from both competitors and spectators to Sunday's event.
Du Plessis thanked the competition's sponsors, whom he said had contributed to the success of the day.
Next on the calender for the local club is the Eastern Province Natural Body Building Championships in Port Elizabeth on 8 September.
Du Plessis said the club would take a team of about 10 members to compete in the various categories.
