Trading Live for Mandela Day – a Rhodes University-led initiative to unite the Grahamstown community in a day of voluntary service, will take place on Friday 26 July and applications to participate closed on Monday 28 May.

Last year, more than 40 student organisations, departments and community organisations took part in the institutional community engagement initiative.

"In line with the main objective of Mandela Day, this project provides staff at Rhodes with an opportunity to take action to help change the world for the better, and in doing so build a global movement for good," said Nosipho Mngomezulu of the Rhodes Community Engagement office.

Between 8am and 5pm on Friday 26 July, staff, students and community organisations will be donating 67 minutes of their time to building and strengthening relationships of reciprocity in Grahamstown.

The trading live concept makes the act of giving a two-way trade: organisations or individuals offer to share their skills, talents, interests or hobbies with other interested parties and make requests to receive a skill or trade from another person in Grahamstown.

The initiative's motto is 'Masibambisane Siluluntu lwase Makan' (let's work together as the community of Makana). "Give a little, get a little," explained Mngomezulu.
