A group of outspoken Victoria Girls’ High School pupils have produced a video clip promoting freedom of speech following the controversial “You Can Help” advertising campaign that landed FNB in hot water earlier this year.

The video is a montage of pupils of the Born-Free generation speaking out and standing up for their democratic right to have freedom of speech.

Shocked at what a fuss the FNB campaign caused, matric pupils Vivienne Dames and Jennifer Upfold decided to make a video to air their opinions.

The bank’s ad campaign in question showed pupils from Naledi High School in Soweto expressing their views on how to build a better South Africa.

The ad was accused of attacking the ANC and its leadership.

Mirroring the FNB video, Dames and Upfold filmed their Victoria Girls’ peers having their say at allocated slots during breaktimes.

The video was uploaded to YouTube in March and has had 348 views since an article was published about the project in The Weekend Post two weeks ago.

“I hope this project gets traction as it is alarming how many people have a lot to say…” said Upfold.

“I’m confident that this will be an ongoing project within the school and there are some very competent ladies who can and will make a big difference.”

The young activists said they plan to set up a freedom of speech forum discussion in the next school term with help from Grade 11s while they are busy writing preliminary matric exams.
