Sunday sees the 9th edition of the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa event in Port Elizabeth, with a number of locals making last minute preparations for the race of their life.

The gruelling event begins with a 3.8km sea swim at Hobie Beach, followed by a 180km cycle and ends with a 42km run.

Nelson Mandela Bay will be fully transformed into Ironman City this weekend as the city gears up for yet another exciting line-up of four events spanning three days.

Entries to all of these events sold out fast, ensuring that there is quantity and quality in this year's group of athletes.

The weekend begins with the Iron Girl South Africa women's fun run on Friday (12 April) and defending champion, Natalie Ross of Rhodes University Athletics Club will be in the starting line-up.

The weekend continues with the Vodacom Corporate Triathlon Challenge and the Pritt Ironkids South Africa on Saturday (13 April).

These events are but a foretaste, and a build-up to the real highlight and main event of the race weekend – the Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa on Sunday 14 April, when the real contenders are challenged to the extreme.

Almost 6 000 atheletes will be competing in the four combined events of the Ironman weekend.

Included in the 1 782 registered athletes in Sunday's Ironman event are local athletes Terri-Lynn Penney, Nolan Berriman, Bossie Bosman, Walter Eksteen, Sean Swanepoel and Richard Hall.
