Hoërskool PJ Olivier hosted its 16th annual Frans Erasmus hockey and netball tournament at the school last weekend. In total, 25 junior schools from around the province took part in the weekend's rugby and netball action.

While most of the schools came from Port Elizabeth, there were also schools from Uitenhage, Graaff-Reinet, Jeffrey's Bay and Humansdorp.

Apart from hosts PJ Olivier, Graeme and St Andrew's Prep were represented in the rugby matches, while PJ, DSG and Victoria Primary School were among the Grahamstown schools taking part in the netball section.

The official opening of the tournament took place at the school on Friday morning.

Balloons were released by PJ pupils, together with members of the PJ U13 rugby and netball sides and the first rugby team, to officially open the weekend's activities.

The Frans Erasmus tournament is named after the former Springbok and Eastern Province rugby player who was killed in a car accident.

He was a rugby coach at PJ Olivier at the time.

This year's tournament was dedicated to Wimpie van der Merwe, former headmaster of Laerskool Cradock, who was killed in a bus accident last July. Van der Merwe had always been core to the Frans Erasmus tournament.

At the conclusion of the weekend's activities, a number of trophies were handed out. Laerskool Handhaaf from Uitenhage won the Trophy for “Bigger Schools”, after they won all their matches.

Handhaaf beat Gill 15-5, St Andrew's A 25-0, Jeffrey's Bay 15-5 and Stulting 30-0.

Hosts PJ Olivier won the “Smaller Schools” trophy after winning all five of the matches in their section. PJ beat Fort Beaufort 25-10, Diaz 25-5, Coastal Zone 25-5, Lorraine 30-0 and Kenton 45-0.

Devan Nel, of PJ, was awarded the Best Player trophy. Devan scored a total of 17 tries in the matches he played.

In other matches, Graeme U13As won both their matches played on the Friday, beating Stulting 15-0 and in the final match of the day, one of the highlighted matches, Graeme beat Jeffrey's Bay 15-10.

St Andrew's U13A lost to Lorraine 15-25 and also lost to Handhaaf 0-25.

Graeme B beat Lorraine B 5-0 and beat the Coastal Zone 25-5. St Andrew's B lost 0-10 to Future Stars and then beat Lorraine B 10-0.

The Grahamstown and Coastal Zone sides were both sponsored to take part in the tournament by PJ Olivier.

In their results, Grahamstown Zone beat Coastal Zone 15-0, beat Fort Beaufort 45-5 and lost to Dr Viljoen 10-25.
