Rain can’t wash away Rhodes spirit

The Rhodes Great Field became an open-air night club as students showed up in their thousands for the annual Rhodes Great Field Party last Friday.

The rain made an appearance just as the event was about to begin, but that didn’t dampen the students’ enthusiasm.

With many 'Rhodents’ donning their trademark white-and-purple-painted overalls, they overcame the weather to officially welcome what they hoped to be a great year ahead.

The Field Party is organised by the Student Representative Council (SRC) in an effort to create unity among students and collectively welcome first-years to Rhodes.

In an attempt to encourage the masses to enjoy themselves without excessive drinking, no spirits were allowed on the field. Students could, however, buy SAB products there.

Security guards were stationed around the field, ready to assist anyone who found themselves in trouble.

This year the SRC brought entertainers Black Coffee and Crazy White Boy to the festivities.

These South African artists proved to be an appreciated addition to the event as students cheered, danced, and sang along to their chart-topping songs.

And judging by students’ feedback on the Rhodes SRC Facebook page, the night was a hit.

One student posted, “any SRC that can bring Black Coffee and charge only R20 for a good time deserve to be saluted… well done SRC 2013”.

The Field Party and noise came to an end at 1am, as a courtesy to people living in the surrounds, although many students went on to local night clubs like Prime, where they could end off their nights with the sounds of 5FM’s DJ Fresh and other local acts.
