World-renowned children’s writer, poet and cartoonist Dr Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” He was right.

To celebrate the joys of reading and the locales of knowledge that have housed books for centuries, children from 17 local schools and the eight Makana libraries gathered at the Extension 9 community hall on Thursday.

They took part in reading showcases, spelling tests, brain teasers and sudoku events in the 'Educate Yourself at Your Library’ competition organised by local stakeholders.

Some kids took part in a fashion show with outfits designed from newspapers. Judges at the event included representatives from the Duna and Makana public libraries and the Department of Education.

The event was an initiative of the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA).

The local Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture, education department and Makana municipality collaborated on the event to promote using local libraries.

It was also a curtain-raiser for the regional leg of the library competition which takes place in Humansdorp today. Library Week 2013 officially starts on 16 March.
