Police spokesperson Mali Govender has issued a warning from SAPS Grahamstown about recent crime hot-spots and trends.

Govender said robberies have reportedly taken place in the following areas:

  • Albany Road
  • Andrew Heemro Road
  • Ayliff Street
  • Cobden Street
  • Drury Lane
  • Ext 6
  • Ext 7
  • High Street
  • Lombo Street
  • Market Street
  • Ncame Street
  • Speke Street
  • Templeton Drive

Tips:

  • Spaza shop owners should avoid keeping large sums of cash on the premises as this attracts criminals
  • School children and students should walk in groups as they are targets when alone.
  • Thefts out of motor vehicles are more prevalent in High Street and Bathurst Street where cars' remote locking systems are overridden by remote controls which criminals possess. The most recent incident occurred in front of Hyundai in Bathurst Street.
  • Handbag snatching has been reported around Clicks and the cathedral area. Govender said three particular men appear to be involved in cases of theft from people and vehicles.
  • There also have been reports of theft from people in Market Square Mall.
