Grahamstown residents and Rhodes students joined millions of protesters around the world, staging events to mark the One Billion Rising campaign against violence against women on Valentine's Day last week.
Starting with a performance in Church Square by dancers of the Juliette & Sita school of Pole Dance, the demonstration culminated in a march to the city hall.
There the campaigners handed over a petition to municipal officials, demanding action to stop sexual violence and abuse against women and children in Makana.
They asked officials to work to improve the conviction rate for these crimes and to educate the public in their rights and responsibilities.
