One of two Kingswood College Junior teams competing in a regional round of the South African Exclusive Books Kids’ Lit Quiz came second, just missing a chance to go to the national finals.
Vying for the number one spot among 14 Eastern Cape school teams in Port Elizabeth last week, Kingswood’s Team A was pipped at the post by Clarendon Park Primary School, while the Kingswood B Team came ninth overall – a great effort on the part of our local literary whiz-kids.
The group of Grade 7s have been diligently preparing in the last year, often meeting and sharing knowledge of the books they read with each other.
Founder of the Kids’ Quiz and lecturer in children’s literature from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, Wayne Mills, presided as quizmaster at the event held at St George’s Prep School.
Testing young readers’ knowledge on a range of different literary categories, Mills sets 10 rounds of 10 questions for each competition.
This year some of the categories were: adventure, donkeys, beasts, hats, cannibalism and 'extra large’.
The teams don’t receive a reading list and don’t know which categories to expect as these change every year.
This is the 10th year that the quiz has been held in South Africa, sponsored by Exclusive Books.
The competition is an international event, with heats being held in New Zealand, UK, Australia, USA, Canada and China.
Kingswood’s Team A consisted of: Danielle Griesel, Julia Kinghan, Lucia Opperman and Peter-John Hamilton. Team B: Christopher Nochera, Bonga Mbande, Naomi Boswell and Camilla James. Emily Vousden travelled with the teams as a reserve.
