Music enthusiasts will be thrilled by the Grahamstown Music Society’s diverse line-up this year from 2012 ATKV-Muziq award-winning percussion duo Cherilee Adams and Dylan Tabisher, to a highly anticipated performance by violinist Yura Lee whose show had to be cancelled last year.

The 2013 schedule began on Tuesday at 7.30pm with South African recorder maestro Stefan Temmingh and celebrated German lutist Axel Wolfe who performed in the St Andrew’s College Drill Hall.
On 11 April the sounds of seasoned Austrian performers, Duo de Salzburg, will be waltzing into the city.
Yvonne Timoiano (cello) and Alexander Preda (piano) have performed together more than 1 000 times worldwide.
Their South African programme will premier two new pieces – a new arrangement of Schubert’s Winter Journey, as well as the world premiere of Katharina Schirk’s Cello up! a piece that was created especially for their 2013 South African tour.
May will showcase the splendour of string instruments.
The Italian Trio Broz siblings Barbara (violin), Giada (violin and viola) and Klaus (cello) will play a programme of Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and Sibelius on 2 May.
Award-winning percussion duo Cherilee Adams and Dylan Tabisher are then scheduled to perform on 12 June, alongside acclaimed pianists Catherine Foxcroft and Mareli Stolp.
Excitingly, the four South Africans will present Bartok’s seldom performed Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion during the second half of the recital.
August is the season for solo excellence, with renowned English concert pianist Antony Peebles. Peebles, who is celebrated for his extensive overseas touring, will return to South Africa once more on 30 August, following a tour of New Zealand.
The rich tones of German baritone Christoph von Weitzel will roll in during the month of October.
Weitzel, a specialist in Wagner, is expected to perform from the German Lied, a one-man opera accompanied by the piano.
The date has yet to be confirmed.
Fans of the violin will be delighted to note the presence of prodigy Yura Lee on the society’s calendar once more.
Among many other awards, the solo artist won the fifth Unisa International String Competition in 2010 and has played with many international orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic.
Her 19 November concert marks the end of the 2013 musical calendar.
The society will also be running the seventh annual Grahamstown Music Competition during June. It is open to junior, senior or tertiary level musicians and to all instruments, including voice.
