The living conditions that drove Eastcape Midlands College students to the streets last week seem to have been resolved.
The students took to the streets to protest their living conditions at Stone Crescent Hotel.
They walked from the hotel, which is on the N2 to Port Elizabeth about 8km outside of Grahamstown, to the College on St Aidan's Avenue.
"[College] management went to the hotel after the march," reported South African Students' Congress (Sasco) political educator Matthew Makeleni.
Since their visit, students at the hotel have been provided with clean drinking water and have been allocated more rooms.
One of the most pressing issues the students raised was the fact that the College had threatened to take away their bursaries if they left the hotel.
Sasco representatives told Grocott's Mail on Tuesday students had been assured this was no longer the case, and some had already left for different accommodation.
"The Sasco executive are happy with these results," said Makeleni. "We will keep fighting for student problems – these places must be suitable and conducive for learning."
While representatives from the College declined to comment on the issue, hotel owner Tariq Hayat said the students had been placed there due to an accommodation crisis on the part of the College.
