The Grahamstown district high school athletics field events took place in very hot conditions at Rhodes University's Prospect Field on Saturday morning.

High school pupils from all over the Makana and Ndlambe municipal areas took part in the races as the top athletes were chosen to represent the Grahamstown districts at the Cacadu championships later this month.

That event will in turn be used to select a team to compete in the Eastern Province championships in Port Elizabeth and East London and ultimately in the South African National Championships.

The local schools' field events are set to take place at PJ Olivier on Thursday 14 February.

The selection stages are as follows:

    Cacadu selection (track and field)

    • Primary schools: Graaff-Reinet, 15 and 16 February
    • High schools: Humansdorp, 22 and 23 February

    EP selection (track and field)

    • Primary schools: Port Elizabeth, 1 and 2 March
    • High schools: East London, 8 and 9 March
    •

    SA championships

    • Primary schools: Free State, 20 and 23 March
    • High schools: East London, 20 and 23 March
