An elderly man was hit over the head with a rock and robbed on Hill Street in broad daylight on Monday.

Police spokesperson Captain Mali Govender said this is one of many incidents reported to the SAPS in an alarming spate of recent street robbery cases.

She said the man was attacked outside Maritime Motors just after midday, after which he was robbed of his personal belongings, including a cell phone.

"The victim is in a serious condition," Govender said, and a case of robbery is under investigation.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to contact warrant officer Anton Annandale on 082 301 9703.

Govender said the dangerous hot spots are Hill, New, McDonald, High and Bathurst Streets.

The community is urged to report any suspicious people loitering. "We have increased our foot patrols in the area. A special investigation team has been set up to investigate these robberies."
