A young woman had a terrifying introduction to the perils of driving when a truck smashed into her instruction vehicle in the Grahamstown Industrial Area on Friday morning.
A Makana municipality tanker had evidently just come around the corner on to Strowan Road when the driver applied brakes sharply – a split second before he crashed into the Toyota Tazz parked at the side of the road.
Owner of the vehicle, Vino Kohl, told Grocott's Mail that driving instructor Johnny Sorse had taken the young woman out for her first driving lesson. He had parked the Tazz at the side of the road, where Kohl's driving school instructors usually stop to give basic instructions to learner drivers.
Kohl said the engine of the car was off, and the learner driver was sitting in the driver's seat when the large Toyota tanker came around the corner and slammed into the stationary Tazz.
The impact of the accident was enough to send the small car into the bushes off the side of the road.
An ambulance arrived allowing medics to stabilise the traumatised learner driver, who was rushed to hospital wearing a neck brace. Sorse did not appear to be injured, but said he felt bruised and would probably go to a doctor in the afternoon.
