Home studios and Christian contemporary music will be the subjects of Monday's edition of Rhodes University Music Department's Sound Thinking music seminar series.
The multi-disciplinary music research seminar series hosted by the Music Department takes place on Mondays from 4.30pm-5.30pm in Room 7 of Bangor House, near the music department, and refreshments will be served afterwards in the Department of Music and Musicology Staff Room.
The first of this Monday's topics is 'Constraints and Freedoms: A phenomenological analysis of the recording experiences of self-producing artists in Grahamstown, South Africa, presented by Jacek Kaminski. Kaminski looks at the constraints and benefits of the democratisation of digital technology, as seen in the trend for artists to record and produce their own music independently in home studios.
The second presentation will be 'Compositional Processes of Contemporary Christian Music Composers in Port Elizabeth: An interpretative phenomenological analysis', by Michele Lourens. Lourens looks at music that is being written by composers who attend two Port Elizabeth churches, exploring their inspiration, their processes and the background influences for them writing their music.
