Some residents were frightened by the layer of smoke that crept through Grahamstown yesterday afternoon, but according to the Makana fire and rescue department there was no reason to worry as it was a case of controlled burning.

A municipal employee, who was not willing to reveal his name, informed italGrocott's Mail/ital that the controlled burning took place around Southwell, farms along the Port Alfred Road, Shamwari Private Game Reserve on the Port Elizabeth road and around the Alicedale area.

While the fire department was not called out to tame any of these controlled fires by late yesterday afternoon, they were on standby in case any fires got out of control.
