Local rugby veterans will be lacing up their boots this weekend to take part in a special Grahamstown rugby heritage celebration. Four matches between veteran clubs (for players older than 35 years) will take place at the Oval sports ground tomorrow.

After the rugby action there will be a function at the Dakawa Art Centre.

The first match kicks off at 11am, between Wanderers and Old Collegians. At noon Universal and Swallows will take to the pitch. At 1pm Winter Rose will meet Eastern, before Lily White take on Brumbies at 2pm.

The function at Dakawa, where the Black Rugby Exhibition will be on display, is scheduled to start at 4pm.

Phumzile Adam, chairman of the Sport History and Heritage of Grahamstown Rugby, said Cheeky Watson will be the guest speaker at the event. The Black Rugby Exhibition will also be on display at Dakawa.

Adam said the aim of the rugby celebration is to “revive rugby and preserve our heritage in Grahamstown”. The event is hosted by the Grahamstown Rugby Veterans' Association.

Adam said the weekend would also be used to launch a veterans' rugby organisation in Grahamstown, which would help with development of rugby at school and club level. The structure will hold coaching clinics and will also serve to identify rugby talent in the area.
