Over the past three weeks there has been some extensive work being done to [a business premises in the CBD]which included the flats above the shop. Although it is good to see landlords improving the look of their buildings, it was shocking to see the way the tenant was treated. In fact, I would go so far as to say it was inhuman.

Over the past three weeks there has been some extensive work being done to [a business premises in the CBD]which included the flats above the shop. Although it is good to see landlords improving the look of their buildings, it was shocking to see the way the tenant was treated. In fact, I would go so far as to say it was inhuman.

Firstly they (the tenant) had to move out of their flat into another vacant flat so that it could be improved, and alterations like flooring and painting could be done. Then while they were still in the temporary flat the workmen just came in and started doing work in that flat! This included sanding and painting. The tenant, who is a student, was trying to study for exams. There was no privacy, to say nothing of the noise and toxic smell of paint.

The estate agents responsible were contacted several times to come and see what was going on and make an attempt to re-locate the students. This of course never happened because the staff member dealing with this particular building is insensitive, uncaring and incompetent. I don't know if the fact that the students are of colour and foreigners was the reason for such unacceptable treatment. Is this some form of passive xenophobia? This student must be compensated and an apology in writing made. It's wrong for estate agents and landlords to treat people like this.

I would like to name and shame the estate agents and the staff member concerned – maybe I will still do so if no action is taken as soon as possible.
