Rhodes University Law students Nick Theron and Andrew Lowndes are raising money for the Sabrina Love Foundation by competing in the world-famous Absa Cape Epic Mountain Bike race this week.

The race, televised live on Supersport, started on Sunday in Durbanville and ends at the Lourensford Wine Estate in Somerset West next Sunday, on 1 April.

Made up of a prologue and seven stages, the event attracts some of the best mountain bike teams from around the world. The two Rhodes students competing are sponsored by a bicycle supplier in Grahamstown, The Motion Shop.

This is Theron and Lowndes's first attempt at such a tough mountain bike race, with this year's route covering 781km – which includes 16 300 metres of climbing. The two have been training for the last five months and said their goal for the race is just to finish with a smile.

“We are complete novices and want to just enjoy the experience and finish, said Lowndes. We're not out there to break records, just to get to the finish line on day eight having done something to help others at the same time.” The Sabrina Love Foundation is a charity that cares for children with special needs.

The Motion Shop's sponsorship includes a combination of shirts, servicing and gels, together with helping to reduce the cost of anything else they've needed, such as a new mountain bike.
